MISSION
THE FOUNDATION
Increased competition and the landmark 1977 Supreme Court decision easing restrictions on attorney advertising created a new environment for the legal community. Law firms recognized the need for formal business planning and professional assistance to develop and implement marketing and communications programs. Out of this need emerged the Legal Marketing Association (LMA), a nonprofit professional association dedicated to serving the needs and maintaining the professional standards of those involved in marketing for the legal profession.
RESPONSE TO A NEED
The Legal Marketing Association (LMA), formed in 1985, is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to providing its members with professional support and education as well as opportunities for intellectual and practical information exchange.

The Legal Marketing Association provides a forum for its nearly 1,000 members that encourages and provides continuing education and professional development; brings together those engaged in the profession of legal services marketing; provides an opportunity to share ideas and experiences while being sensitive to the competitive position of legal providers and issues of confidentiality; establishes criteria and maintains professional standards of conduct and performance; and educates the legal community and other professionals about the role of the marketing professional and its function within the legal services industry.
Anyone involved in the promotion of law firms will benefit from membership including members of law firm marketing departments, consultants to law firms and providers of marketing services and solutions for law firms.
